The Deacon Ministry of First Baptist Church Trussville seeks to follow in the
footsteps of Christ.  Jesus, though God in the flesh:

"made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in
  human likeness..."   -Philippians 2:7

Likewise, our deacon body leads by serving.  This calls for taking on many
"behind the scenes" duties for the benefit of others and to the glory of God the
Father.  The Deacon Ministry is comprised of very dedicated, unselfish men, led
by current deacon chairman, Mike Akridge.

  Deacon Service
The purpose of a deacon is to serve.  Made up of lay leaders, our deacon ministry is designed to maintain the highest Biblical standards for leadership. Perhaps Paul said it best in his first letter to Timothy:

"Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in too much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons."

-I Timothy 3:8-10

Using Christ as their ultimate example, this body of men work closely with the Ministry Team and lay leaders to equip our membership, attend to specific needs and lead the work of the church.

Deacon candidates are nominated once a year, usually in the summer.  From there nominees undergo a time of counsel, prayer and consideration.  New deacons are then ordained each year in a special Sunday evening ordination service.

Hospital Visitation
One purpose of our deacon body is to assist with the needs of our congregation. Hospital visitation is one such need, as these faithful men maintain contact with those going through times of physical trial.

Deacons within the visitation ministry serve on a rotating basis each month, being assigned to a given hospital on a given day.  Our Ministry Team also conducts hospital visits, but it is the work of our deacons that ensures that those in need of prayer and encouragement receive just that.

Hospital Visitation Procedures
Our deacon body is careful to follow specific guidelines in performing hospital visitation. The following document is intended for current deacons as a reference to these procedures.

  Widows/Widowers
In James 1:27 we are reminded that one of our duties as Christians is to "look after orphans and widows," caring for and attending to their needs. Again, our deacon body lead the way in this pursuit, each assigned at least one widow to care for and stay in contact with.

Once a year, usually in November as the holidays near, our deacons come together with their widows/widowers for a banquet in these beloved peoples' honor, demonstrating our love for them by sharing a meal and voicing our love corporately to them as a church.
